Are you organizing a Functional Fitness event? Host it on RoxRace →
Functional fitness is a broad category covering competitions that combine weightlifting, gymnastics, and conditioning into one event — most commonly associated with CrossFit-style competitions, but also covering hybrid events, fitness challenges, and gym-hosted competitions that don't fit neatly into the HYROX or OCR formats.
Unlike HYROX (which has a strict, repeatable format), functional fitness competitions vary widely from event to event. A competition might be a single workout, a series of workouts across one day, or a multi-day affiliate-style event with multiple finals.
The category is intentionally broad on RoxRace because Nordic gyms run a huge variety of competition formats — annual gym throwdowns, charity events, team competitions, partner workouts. If it's a competitive fitness event that isn't strictly HYROX, OCR, swimrun, or a pure running race, it likely fits here.
Format varies by event. A single-workout competition might be one timed WOD (workout of the day) with all athletes completing the same task. A multi-workout competition spreads several workouts across the day, with cumulative scoring based on placement in each. Team and partner formats divide work between two or more athletes.
Movements typically include weightlifting (clean and jerk, snatch, deadlift), gymnastics (pull-ups, muscle-ups, handstand walks, ring work), and conditioning (rowing, running, burpees, box jumps). The specific movements and standards are published in advance on the event's race page.

Read the event description carefully. Functional fitness competitions vary so much that generic preparation advice doesn't apply — train for the specific movements and time domains the competition will use.
If the competition is part of an annual gym throwdown or open event, ask about past programming or what to expect. Most organizers will share enough to help athletes prepare without spoiling specific workouts. And — broadly — build a base across all three areas: strength, gymnastics, and conditioning. Functional fitness rewards generalists.
HYROX is a single, repeatable format — same eight stations, same distances, every race. Functional fitness competitions are bespoke per event: different workouts, different movements, different scoring. Both are valid; they reward different training.
Most competitions offer multiple divisions — RX (prescribed weights and movements), Scaled (lighter weights or modified movements), and sometimes Intermediate or Masters. Pick the division that matches your current fitness honestly.
Standard gym equipment — barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, pull-up rigs, rowing machines, box jumps. Specific equipment used in each workout is published with the event details.
Many competitions explicitly welcome first-timers in scaled divisions. If you train regularly at a CrossFit gym or with functional fitness programming, you're competition-ready for an introductory division.
