Are you organizing a HYROX Simulation event? Host it on RoxRace →
HYROX is a fitness racing format combining running and functional workout stations. A standard HYROX race is eight 1-kilometre runs alternated with eight workout stations — SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges, and Wall Balls — completed back-to-back for time.
A HYROX simulation is an event hosted by an affiliate gym that replicates the full HYROX race format on a smaller scale. Simulations are typically held in a single gym across one day, with athletes running in heats throughout the day. They're used by athletes to benchmark performance, prepare for official HYROX events, or simply compete in the format without travelling to a major race.
Most simulations support the same categories as official HYROX: Singles (Open, Pro, Adaptive, Age Group), Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Times are measured by chip or recorded manually at each station.
Athletes start in heats — typically 8 to 16 at a time, every few minutes. Each heat runs the full course: 1km run, station 1, 1km run, station 2, and so on through all eight stations. The total distance is 8km of running plus the workout stations, and most athletes finish between 60 and 110 minutes depending on category and fitness level.
Results are recorded per station and at the finish line. After the race, athletes can compare splits across the field, see their station-by-station performance, and benchmark against official HYROX times.

Train both the running and the functional movements. Many HYROX athletes underestimate how much the run segments compound — by station six, your legs are heavy and your pace drops. Practice running fast immediately after a strength movement (a brick workout).
Learn the specific movements, especially sled work — sled push and pull technique matters more than raw strength. Practice transitions: getting off the rowing machine and straight into a run is its own skill. And pace conservatively in the first half — most first-time HYROX athletes go out too hot and pay for it on stations five through eight.

No. Simulations are open to all fitness levels, and the Open category exists specifically for first-timers. If you can run 5km and lift moderate weights, you can finish a HYROX simulation.
Most simulations offer Singles (Open, Pro, and sometimes Age Group), Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. The specific categories vary by event — check the race page for the simulation you're interested in.
The race itself takes 60-110 minutes depending on category and fitness. Plan for 2-3 hours on site total when you include warmup, heat waiting, and cool-down.
It depends on the event. Some simulations are sanctioned as qualifying events; most are not. The race page will state qualification status for each event.
Running shoes you're comfortable in for both running and the workouts, lifting belt if you use one, and your usual hydration and nutrition. The gym provides all station equipment.
Yes — a simulation is the best possible first HYROX experience. Smaller field, friendlier atmosphere, same format as the official race. Pick the Open category and go.
